Host club rider Douglas Watson took a clear victory by over a minute in the GTR Return to Life 10 before then taking up marshalling duties, while Patricia Baird (Ecosse Performance Cycling Coaching) took the women’s win.

First rider off Watson took advantage of perfect conditions to clock a winning time of 18 minutes and 55 seconds along the out and back A78 course in North Ayrshire.

Along with winning the event veteran rider Douglas then picked up a marshal’s jacket and flag to help direct the later starters in the 114-rider field.

The WW10/03 course saw riders start on the edge of the Eglington Country Park, near Kilwinning, before heading south on the A78 which runs along the coast and then turning for home.

Watson also won the Fullarton Wheelers event on the same course in June clocking a time of 20.01 on that occasion.

A close battle for second place resulted in a host of riders all finishing within a minute of each other.

Alan Thomson (RT23) eventually took second just breaking the 20-minute mark by finishing in 19.58, while Jamie Kennedy (GTR Return to Life) took third a further 19 seconds back.

Marc Anderson (London RC) took the veteran’s over-40 prize in 20.37 while Carlos Riise (Shetland Wheelers) won the veteran over-50 accolade in 20.56.

Baird, who finished third in the Royal Albert CC 10, in April clocked a time over one-and-a-half minutes faster on this occasion to win in 23.33.
