Simon Wilson (Ribble Pro Cycling) set a new course record on his way to victory in the Wigan Wheelers 30-mile time trial in Cumbria on Sunday, while Rebecca Rimmington (Team Merlin) was fastest female.
On a very windy day most riders tackling the L308 course near Levens stayed dry, although some did have to endure a shower.
39-year-old Wilson’s time of 59-34 was the only one under the hour mark and was a new course record. Second on the day was Richard Bickley (Border City Wheelers) with 1-02-16, while 45 seconds further back in third was Phil Jones (Transition RT).
Rimmington clocked 1-10-54 to win the women’s prize by 2-33 from team-mate Deborah Moss, while third fastest female was Shetland Wheelers’ Christine Maclean with 1-18-27.
Ben Harrison (Crimson Performance) posted a time of 1-04-01 for fourth overall, while Adam Taylor (Wigan Tri) was ninth in his first open time trial, his time of 1-08-37 including a two minute late start. Had he arrived at the timekeeper at the required slot he would’ve finished a superb sixth.
The L308 takes riders from the start near Sedgwick at the junction of the A590 and A591 at Brettargh Holt and heads south west through Levens to Lindale where riders turn and retrace.
Wilson’s performance was his eighth victory in eight events on his CTT record so far in 2019, coming after victories at the Chorley CC 10, the East Lancashire RC 25, and the National Team Time Trial Championship alongside Dan Bigham and John Archibald.
Earlier in the season Wilson also won the Manchester and Dist TTA 25, West Pennine RC 10, North Lancs RC 10 and Lancaster CC hilly 21.
Rimmington’s win was her fourth on record from five events so far this season. She teamed up with Moss to win the Blackburn and District CTC two-up 10 in May, and was fastest female in the North Lancashire RC 10 and Kent Valley RC 28.5 in April. And in March she was beaten into second by just four seconds in the Lancaster CC hilly 21.
