Adam Duggleby (Vive Le Velo) and Erica Booth (Lancashire RC) braved the wet conditions to take the men’s and women’s category victories in the Croston Velo 10-mile time trial in Cumbria on Saturday evening.
The ‘pan flat’ out and back L1015 along the A590 near Kendal was hit by wet weather despite little wind.
In his first individual open of the season Duggleby, aged 34 and from Leeds, braved the challenging conditions to clock a winning time of 19 minutes and three seconds.
Veteran Andy Jackson (AeroCoach) had to settle for second place on this occasion finishing 36 seconds behind his younger competitor. Also beating the 20-minute mark to clinch third place overall was host club rider Tom Rigby clocking 19.47.
“It was a disgusting day to be honest,” said Duggleby. “When I got there it wasn’t too bad but one hour before the start it hammered down and I didn’t want to get out of the van to warm up.
“So I did a 10-minute ride before riding to the start. The conditions were horrible but there wasn’t much wind and it was pretty still.
“The spray off the road meant I couldn’t see where I was going. I’m probably going to go out for the shorter stuff this year with events of 10, 25 and 50 miles and won’t be riding the 12 hour or 100-mile championships but the tandem is my priority.”
Meanwhile in the women’s event 39-year-old Booth clocked an average speed of over 27 miles per hour on her way to setting a winning time of 21.53.
Host club rider Lindsey Styler led the chase behind taking second place with 23.52 while veteran rider Vanessa Townshend (Springfield Financial Racing Team) took third in 24.28.
