Gemma Johnson (Beacon Roads CC) and David Mead (Race Rapid) were the quickest female and male riders at the Beacon Roads CC 10 near Dunnington in Warwickshire on Saturday.

Johnson, the 36-year-old from Birmingham who rides for the promoting club, covered the K33/10d course in 22-46 to win by 40 seconds from Melissa Haselden (Phoenix Velo), while Lyme Racing Club’s Gail Lowe was another 24 seconds back in third.

Race Rapid rider Mead, the 42-year-old from Nuneaton, clocked 19-46 to win by seven seconds from Tim Ashton (Royal Sutton CC), while Mead’s team-mate at Race Rapid David Kiernan was another six seconds back in third.

The event – the Janet Kelly Memorial 10 – also featured as round four of the Midlands Women’s Time Trial Series, and included several women who were competing in their first open time trial.

Father and daughter Rosie and Steve Croggon from Beacon Roads CC were the quickest tandem in a time of 24-07, while the team prize went to the host club too, being worked out according to the fastest two men and one woman.

David Mead

Roger Cutler and Simon Dighton clocked 21-27 and 21-44 respectively, and when joined by fastest female Johnson they secured the team prize.

The riders got wet around five minutes before the start when a torrential downpour threatened to put a dampener on the event, but it stopped before the first rider had hit the road and held off.

This win was Mead’s third open time trial victory of the season, coming as it does after wins in the Coventry CC 10 and Royal Sutton CC 10. He has been in good form so far this season, having also seconds second spot in the Worcester St Johns CC 18.5-mile event in April as well as the Bromsgrove Olympique CC 10 on May.

The last rider off in the women’s event, Johnson’s win was her first open victory of the season having previously placed fourth at the Burton and District CA women’s 10-mile event on May 18. She is next due to be in action in the Wyre Forest CRC 10 on July 6.
