Chapman and Garthwaite victorious in windy Wrekinsport CC 18
Charlotte Chapman (Nova Raiders) and Matt Garthwaite (Holohan Coaching RT) were fastest female and male riders respectively as Wrekinsport CC staged their annual 18-mile hilly time trial in Shropshire on Saturday.
Using the K21/18 course near Worfield, the event was run in very windy conditions, with many riders only getting any assistance from the conditions in the final two miles as vicious crosswinds battered entrants, particularly on the leg to Sutton Maddock.
The course is roughly triangular, taking riders from the start to the south of Worfield, east along the A454 before cutting left up the B4176 then heading back south at the junction of the A442 near Sutton Maddock down to the outskirts of Bridgnorth where they turn again onto the A454 and head to the finish.
33 and from Newport, Garthwaite clocked 40-06 to take the win by more than two minutes from Jonny Morris (FishFace Cycles RT), while another minute back was Tim Beardmore (Nova Raiders) in third.
Beardmore’s team-mate at Nova Raiders, 21-year-old Loughborough University student Charlotte Chapman from Hinstock in Shropshire, was fastest of the females in a time of 49-26.
That gave her the win in the women’s category by 1-20 from Emma Sarjeant (Hafren CC), while Hannah Pearson (FishFace Cycles RT) was third with 52-40.
Best of the veterans on standard was Tim Beardmore (Nova Raiders) who had a plus of 4.48, while second in that category with a plus of 3-49 was Victor Chetta (Mid-Shropshire Wheelers), the 41-year-old who was third in the National 24-Hour Championships in 2016.
