Dan Bigham and Katie Archibald were the fastest male and female riders respectively as the National Circuit Championships were staged in Yorkshire on Saturday afternoon.
Bigham clocked 36-47 to take the win by 20 seconds, and he also led a clean sweep of the podium for Ribble Pro Cycling with John Archibald and Simon Wilson being second and third.
Katie Archibald, the 24-year-old from Glasgow who has won multiple Olympic, Commonwealth and World medals, took the win ahead of Alice Lethbridge (DRAG2ZERO), the Wiggle High 5 rider clocking 42-16 for the course which was 35 seconds better than Lethbridge, while Jess Atkinson (Cambridge University CC) was third.
The win comes little more than a month after Archibald broke her collar bone in a fall during the Tour de Yorkshire.
“I was happy with my ride. I had surgery on my collar bone four weeks ago and this was my first public test, so I’m happy with how it went,” said Archibald.
“It’s nice to have an intense and exciting circuit to ride on, it makes a change from a lot of the rides I do. There was a light wind, and I was grateful for the cool air and lack of a block headwind.”
And fastest male rider Dan Bigham – who is still getting back to form after a crash three weeks ago - said: “It was a little bit windy out on the course but nothing too drastic. It’s a nice rolling course with varied terrain, so I enjoyed it.
“My first lap was good, but I struggled with the second lap. I just need to get into the swing of time trialling a bit more, work on my pacing and learn how hard to go.”
Hosted by Bridlington CC, the event used two laps of the 10-mile V415 circuit near Burton Fleming.
In other categories, Thomas Prentice (GS Metro) was crowned junior boys national champion having covered the course in 39-47. That gave him the win by around a minute and a half over Adam Jarps (Team Bottrill), while Toni Wilkes (London Women’s Racing CC) was fastest of the junior girls.
And David Murphy (Liverpool Mercury Dolan CC) was the winner of the paracyclists national title with a handicapped time of 41-29, while Nicholas Fairfield (City RC Hull) was second.
The championship doubled up as the sixth and final round of the Knight Composites Classic TT Series. Dean Robson finished 15th, which was enough for him to clinch the overall series win in the men’s competition.
In the women’s series, Kelly Murphy (C2 Racing) and Jessica Rhodes Jones (Beacon Roads CC) both did not start. Murphy has won the overall series.
In other categories of the Knight Composites Classic TT Series, Peter Nicholls (Race Hub) won the veterans on actual category, while Adam Jarps (Team Bottrill) was crowned junior series winner.
Jackie Field (CC Ashwell) was top female veteran having ridden all six rounds, while Rob Walker (Cambridge University CC) was top espoir. Peter Greenwood (Team Swift) won the veterans on target time category, while Team Bottrill-Vanguard won the team category with Adam Jarps being joined by James Rix and Graham Kemp.
