Stuart Fairweather (Team Velovelocity) and Jo Fisk (Ride Harder) were fastest male and female riders respectively as CC Breckland staged their traditional New Year’s Day 10-mile time trial in Norfolk.
Using the faster B10/3a course near Morley instead of the planned B course near Attleborough, the event was greeted by warm weather and good conditions, which led to many riders laying down good marker times for their 2019 seasons to come.
Fairweather covered the course in 19-58 and was the only rider to go under the 20-minute mark with Lucas He (Cambridge University CC) taking second spot with 20-21. Mark Richards (DAP CC) was third, just one second further back from espoir rider He.
Fisk, 46 and from Bungay in Suffolk, clocked 26-54 to finish as fastest female by nine seconds from Stephanie Hoyle (Godric CC) who had to settle for second for a second year running.
The team prize went to VC Baracchi with Paul Dennington, Paul Haywood and Alex He combining for a total of 1-10-24.
Riders traversed the B10/3a course from Besthorpe along the A11 but headed north east to Wymondham and back instead of the slower B10/3b course in the other direction.
Fairweather’s win bodes well for a good 2019 season ahead, and he will be hoping to replicate some of the strong rides he put in during 2018.
Back in October he was victorious in the Norwich ABC 25, while August saw him win the VC Norwich 10 on the B10/3b course. He also won the Stowmarket and District CC 10 in July as well as June’s Godric CC 10 and several other events earlier in the year.
Fisk’s victory was her first in open competitions on record, although she placed second in the Godric CC 25 back in September and had a couple of other top five placings in 2018.
