Fiona Burnie and Thomas Prentice were victorious at the GS Metro hill climb near Prudhoe on Sunday.

Junior rider Prentice (GS Metro) set a time of 4-27 as he narrowly secured the top step on the podium by a margin of two seconds.

He said: “I’ve had a cold all week, so I really didn’t know which way the race was going to go today to be fair. I’m aiming to do the National Championships again this year, so it’s nice to get my first even out the way with a win.”

Colin Atkinson (Muckle CC)  posted a time of 4-29 to finish second. He finished 50th last season at the National Hill Climb which took place on the same course. That day he set a time of 4-36, so he has managed to shave seven seconds off his time this time around.

Jamie Johnson (Barnesbury CC) finished in third as he posted a time of 4-30. The 24-year-old was last victorious at the Allen Valley Velo 24.8 back in July.

Fiona Burnie (GS Metro) secured a male and female double for the host club. She clocked a time of 4.59 to be the fastest women that day.  The victory starts off her season well with this being her first hill climb of the year.

She said: “It feels like quite a while since I’ve been on this hill, as I haven’t been back since last year’s Nationals.

“I’d forgotten how much hill climb events hurt and how horrible they are. Thanks to the massive tail wind I’ve managed to get another four seconds off my time I set last October, so I’m very happy with that.

The team prize was secured by the narrowest of margins by Muckle CC. The team consisted  of Colin Atkinson, Andy Richardson and Lee Cuthbertson.
