Gary Chambers (NoPinz) retained the 10 and 25 mile Royal Navy Championships he won last year while Emma Angove (73 Degrees) was victorious in both women’s title races.
Perfect conditions for both events led to fast times and Chambers’ time of 19.41 for 10 miles on Saturday evening and 50.40 for his 25 miles on Sunday morning are both thought to be course records, yet to be confirmed.
“It was good conditions on both days and both were nice and warm,” said Chambers.
“The 25-mile course was quite a strange one as it was lumpy with quite a few drags on it so you had to get your pacing right.
“On Sunday the conditions were dead still and were nearly perfect and I had half an eye on the course record.
“I knew what average speed I needed and went for it in the last few miles. I think I ducked under it by 15 seconds.
“The Navy Championships is always a bit of a target for most of the Navy riders and every year the club is growing and growing so it’s getting more competitive every year as the club moves forward.”
On the same course last year Chambers, from Portsmouth, finished in 20.15 for 10 miles and 51.06 for 25 miles and finished second overall to Ryan Perry (Team Raleigh GAC) but won the Royal Navy Championships.
The positions behind Chambers changed for both distances with fastest veteran Mark Brock (Somerset RC) finishing second in the 10-mile in 20.53 while James Tribble (Mid Devon CC) took third a further second behind.
In the 25-mile event Rich Hunt (Army CU) took second in 53.14 while Josh Griffiths (Bristol South CC) finished third (53.30).
Mark Brock (Somerset RC) was once again fastest veteran clocking 54.10.
Angove, who finished seventh in the Composite Classic Series second round last month also clinched victory in both events clocking 24.41 for 10 miles and 1:03.39 for 25 miles.
