Stephen Irwin and Erica Booth were victorious at the Kent Valley Road Club charity 25-mile time trial in Cumbria on Sunday morning.
Irwin, the 47-year-old North Lancashire Road Club rider from Burnley in Lancashire, clocked 51-48 for the L2524 course near Levens, which gave him the win by 18 seconds from Border City Wheelers rival Richard Bickley.
The third and final spot on the men’s podium went to Dan Taylor (Coveryourcar.co.uk) who was almost two minutes slower than Irwin.
And in the women’s event, GB triathlete Erica Booth took the win, the 38-year-old Lancashire Road Club rider clocking 58-58 to win by 1-02 from Deborah Moss (Team Merlin) who clocked exactly one hour, while third was Rachael Moss (Holmfirth CC), another 34 seconds off the pace.
The event was the Edwin Howson Memorial 25, and was a charity event with no prizes as all profits went to Cure Leukaemia. The L2524 course takes riders from the start and south west along the A590 to Lindale, where they turn and retrace. They proceed past the start point and turn again near Sedgwick and complete another run down to Lindale and back, finishing just short of the start point.
Irwin’s win is the latest in a string of good rides in 2018 – although it is only his second open victory. After winning the VTTA Yorkshire 25 back in April, he was second in the Nelson Wheelers 25 and third in the South Pennine RC 25 last month.
In 2017 Booth took second in the European Sprint Triathlon Championships in Dusseldorf, while she won bronze at the European Triathlon Championships that same month in Kitzbuhel, Austria.
