Victory for Nicholls and Clay in Coalville Wheelers 10
Peter Nicholls and Alex Clay were victorious at the Coalville Wheelers 10-mile time trial in Leicestershire on Saturday, staged on the Breedon circuit near Griffydam.
Nicholls, the 40-year-old who lives nearby in Coalville, is the reigning Emergency Services 10 and 25-mile champion following victories in those title races in Northumberland last July.
His time of 21.04 in the Coalville Wheelers event on Saturday gave him the win by 16 seconds from Team Bottrill’s James Bentley, while his colleague at Team Bottrill Daniel Barnett was third, another minute off the pace.
The fastest female was Deal Tri Club rider Alex Clay, the 22-year-old who is also a member of Loughborough Students CC and was riding her first open time trial.
Her time of 25.26 gave her the win in that category by 1-11 from Jessica Denman (Ilkeston CC), while just one second further back was Francesca Hall (Race Hub) in third.
The team prize went to the Leicestershire RC trio of Steve Savage, Stephen Howgill and Phillip Maddocks, while Francesca Hall led Race Hub to the women’s team prize alongside Suzanne Hull.
In the veterans categories Mark White (Mark White Coaching RT) was fastest 40-49 rider, while the 50-59 prize went to Michael Wills (Lutterworth Cycle Centre) and Mervyn Sperry (Coalville Wheelers) was the over-60 winner.
Matt Stretton (Coalville Wheelers) was the fastest junior rider, while his team-mate Millie Shaw was the top female junior.
Starting north of Griffydam, the course took riders up and over the A42 before looping anti-clockwise through Breedon on the Hill, down almost as far as Lount, back over the A42 and across to the B5324 before heading up to the finish just beyond Osgathorpe.
