Joanne Jago (Performance Cycles) made full use of a strong tailwind as she sliced around 35 seconds from her own course record for the UH26 Burrington Combe climb at Blagdon on Sunday.

The Bristol-based rider – who was celebrating her 37th birthday on Sunday – clocked 8:24.1 to win on the day by 32 seconds from Frances Bromley (Buxton CC) and take 35.4 seconds from her old course record set in the same event last year.

Meanwhile, Joe Norledge (Bristol South CC) was the fastest man, covering the two-mile climb in 6:57.6 to win by just 1.5 seconds from Bristol RC rival Phil Stonelake, while Andrew Kirby (Univ of Bristol CC) was third, another 2.4 seconds off the mark.

Kirby led the University of Bristol CC to the team prize alongside Oliver Walker-Hayers and Hugh Bradshaw, while the fastest junior was Ben Wainwright (Team Tor 2000) who covered the course in 7:36.00 for joint 14th.

The prolific Jago now has four wins and two second place finishes in her last six rides, other successes coming in the previous day’s Team Tor 2000 climb on West Close Hill as well as the Stratford CC and Severn RC climbs, with her final event before next weekend’s nationals coming at the Bristol South CC climb on Sunday.

Norledge has also been in good form this season. He won the Stratford CC climb of Dovers Hill last weekend, was victorious in September’s Somerset Road Club climb and was second in the VC Walcot and Mid-Devon CC climbs.

19th in last year’s National Hill-Climb Championships, he will be aiming to improve on that placing in this year’s event on Sunday.
