Rowan Brackston and Joscelin Lowden made it two wins in one day after winning the men’s and women’s prizes in the inaugural Velopace Butts Lane hill climb near Willingdon on Saturday afternoon.

After winning the East Sussex event at Firle Bostal in the morning, the Imperial College CC rider completed the 1.18km Velopace course in 3:33.8.

It was a winning margin of around eight seconds with a tie for second place. Veteran Bigfoot CC rider Bill Bell, third in the East Sussex CA event, finished in 3:41.3 and this was matched by Chris Newberry (Redhill CC). The result was enough to give Bell the veteran prize.

It was a close-fought battle for the podium places with David Ross (LFGSS CC), second in the East Sussex CA, fourth in a time of 3.43.7. Espoir rider Nick Martin of East Grinstead CC was fifth.

It was another convincing win for Joscelin Lowden in the women’s category. After coming an impressive sixth at Firle, she was in the top ten overall again with a time of 4:15.6 giving the Lewes Wanderers CC rider eighth overall.

Remarkably, Debbie Percival of 34 Nomads CC was second woman in 32nd place overall – the exact same result as in at the East Sussex - with a time of 5.25.1.
