Richard Cartland (Trainsharp) and Jennifer Andrews (CC Ashwell) powered to victory in the Blazing Saddles hill-climb on Knights Hill at Goodwood in Sussex on Sunday.

Challenging conditions saw a damp road surface and headwind on Knights Hill and course records weren’t in any danger, but there were still some impressive performances all things considered.

Cartland, 39 and from Lewes in East Sussex, clocked 3.48 to take the win by nine seconds from Joshua Monk (The Cycleroom), with Adam Littlechild (Racing Club Ravenna) took third, another second back.

Meanwhile Andrews clocked 4.55 to win the women’s prize by six seconds from Elise Sherwell (Blazing Saddles), while Nicola Mengham (Bognor Regis CC) was third fastest female with 7.05.

It was Cartland’s first open hill-climb victory of the season, and he will next be in action at the Bec CC climb on White Lane, Titsey, next Sunday.

Jennifer Andrews placed second in the previous days Kingston Wheelers hill-climb on Leith Hill with National 12-hour champion Alice Lethbridge taking the win there.

Andrews is due to be in action again in a fortnight, as she rides the Essex Roads CC and Watford Velo Sport hill-climbs on Oct 14 and 15.
