Andy Cunningham (All Terrain Cycles) and Susan Patterson (Honister 92) struck clear victories in the Border City Wheelers event up Hartside Fell.

The five-mile climb in the exposed North Pennines is one of the longest continual climbs in England with an average gradient of five per cent and maxing out at seven per cent.

Patterson, 28 and from Ilkley, clocked a winning time of 16 minutes and 28 seconds which was enough for victory by 46 seconds from Patrick Clarke (Team B38/Underpin Racing).

Fastest junior Olli Dawson (Border City Wheelers) took third in 17.42.

Patterson had already opened his hill climb win tally earlier this season clinching victory in the Yorkshire CF Hill Climb after taking a string of wins in last season’s campaign.

In the women’s category Patterson clocked a winning time of 23.04 which was enough for victory by 44 seconds from Charlotte Gorman (Team Lusso) whose 23.48 was just three seconds faster than third place Joanna Rea (Blaydon CC).

Fastest veteran 40+ was scratch rider Niall Patterson (Velo Club Cumbria) in 18.30, who was beaten by veteran 50+ winner Colin Atkinson (Muckle Cycle Club) in 18.13.
