Records fall in Sussex CA 10

Course records were broken three times in the Sussex CA 10-mile time trial staged on the winding G10/45 course near Loxwood in West Sussex on Saturday.

James Boyman (Hoops Velo) broke the men’s course record, while Jennifer Allum (PMR at Toachim House) and Lisa Davis (Lewes Wanderers CC) both broke the women’s course record, Davis eventually proving fastest.

The event was run off with a very slight wind and warm temperatures, and using a course best described as quiet country lanes – although it does feature a one in 12 climb for added interest.

Farnham-based 27-year-old James Boyman clocked 20-45, beating his own course record from last year by 12 seconds. That gave him the win by 25 seconds from 43-year-old Howard Bayley (Blazing Saddles), whose time of 22-10 was just one second outside being a new veterans record too.

Third spot went to a3crg rider Stephen Williamson with 22-50, while the team prize went to GS Stella trio of David Shepherd, Mark Jones and Ben Fielden.

The last man off, Boyman is clearly a man in good form having placed eighth at the National 25-mile Championship earlier this month. Earlier in the season, he won the Epsom CC 10, was second in the Newbury RC 15, and won the Epsom CC 25.

In the women’s event, Jennifer Allum broke the women’s course record with a time of 26-32, which was 38 seconds better than the old mark. But her record only stood for around three and a half minutes, with Lisa Davis (Lewes Wanderers CC) clocking 26-11 to set a new best and take the win on the day by 21 seconds.

Veteran rider Davis has featured on podiums several times this season, but this is her first win in an open time trial.

In March she was third in the East Sussex CA 15, while she was similarly third in the Southern Counties CU 25 and Lewes Wanderers 30 in April and May respectively.

June saw her finish third in the Southborough and District Wheelers 25, while she was second in the Sussex CA 50 last month.
