Mark Smith (Crawley Wheelers) and Gina McGeever (Lewes Wanderers) were fastest man and woman at the Sussex CA 30-mile time trial held on the G30/91 course near Washington in West Sussex on Sunday.
43-year-old Smith from Lindfield in West Sussex clocked 1:04.23 to win by more than a minute. Runner-up with 1:05.37 was Steve Dennis (East Grinstead CC) while Keith Lea (Paceline RT) was third, another four seconds back.
McGeever, 45 and from Hove, covered the course in 1:18.59 to win by around two and a half minutes from Joy Payne (Amersham RCC).
There were prizes throughout the field for various categories.
Worthing Excelsior CC won the team prize with Nik Allen, Nolan Heather and Neil Crowther combining to post 3:33.59 which gave them the win over the Brighton Mitre CC trio by more than 15 minutes.
As well as finishing second overall, Steve Dennis was the fastest veteran on CTT target time, his plus of 17.12 giving him the win by 1-17 from Brighton Mitre CC’s Donald Parker.
The veterans were split into five-year age bands, Smith being the best in the 40-44 category and Keith Lea winning the 45-49 group.
While Steve Dennis was top 50-54 veteran, the 55-59 prize went to Peter Owen (Norwood Paragon CC). Fastest 60-64 rider was Peter Davies (Brighton Mitre CC) with 1:21.27, while Mike O’Gorman (Worthing Exceelsior CC) was top 65-69 veteran with an impressive time of 1:15.10.
Smith has been a prolific winner of time trials throughout the 2017, with the Sussex CA 30 victory being just the latest in a string of good performances.
He won the a3crg 25 and Whitewebbs CC 10 earlier this month, while June saw him first across the line in the a3crg 25, the East Sussex CA 50, Sussex CA 15 and the Southern Counties CU 50.
Earlier in the season he was already finding his winning form, with victories in both the hilly and ‘flat’ Brighton Mitre CC 10-mile time trials, as well as Lewes Wanderers 30. And in April he won the Sussex CA 25 and Crawley Wheelers sporting 41.6-mile time trial.
McGeever was also the fastest female in last month’s Old Portlians CC 25 as well as being quickest woman in the road bike category of the Brighton Mitre CC 10 in May.
She was also part of the first two-up team with a woman at the East Sussex Ca two-up 23.9-mile time trial in April.
