Wendy Gooding (Team Bottrill-HSS Hire) and Ross Clarke (TMG Horizon CT) were fastest female and male riders as Chronos Racing Team staged a 10-mile time trial on the F2a/10 course near Hardwick in Cambridgeshire on Saturday.

Gooding, the 53-year-old from Oundle in Northamptonshire, clocked 22.18 to take the win in the women’s category by just four seconds from fellow veteran Bronwen Ewing (Rye and District Wheelers), with VC Norwich’s Jennifer Smart another 40 seconds off the pace in third.

And in the men’s category Clarke took the win with a time of 19.51, which was 21 seconds quicker than runner-up Karl Willis (Herts Rouleurs RC), while third was veteran Rob Fletcher (TMG Horizon CT) with 20.28.

Gooding, who has been focusing on her time trialling bike after suffering an Achilles injury while competing in duathlon races a couple of years ago, set a new personal best by 17 seconds, despite conditions she described as being ‘quite blowy’.

“It seemed like it was fairly downhill on the way out and with a headwind, so I expected it to be hard on the way back but I dug in and the time checks were looking good,” said Gooding, who is being trained by Brett Harwood.

“I really didn’t expect to be beating Bronwen though, as I’m quite new to this and she’s got a lot of experience.

“Up to a couple of months ago I was racing on a road bike, so I recently treated myself to a time trial bike and have loved the difference it has made.”

In the 2016 event Ross Clarke had to settle for fifth despite being four seconds quicker than his 2017 time. And the win in Saturday’s event was his first open victory of the season so far, despite some strong rides and podium finishes.

He was third in the Finsbury Park CC 50 earlier this month, and placed second in the Hertfordshire Wheelers 10 in June.

Meanwhile, Gooding’s win in the latest of several strong rides in 2017.

She was fastest female in the Melton Olympic 25 the weekend before her Chronos win, as well as being fastest female in the Fenland Clarion 25, Peterborough CC 10 and VTTA East Anglia 10 earlier in the season.

She was second in the Team Cambridge 10 two weeks ago with Bronwen Ewing taking the win on that day, so her victory in the Chronos RT event will give her a boost.
