David Janes (Veloton) and Joanne Jago (Performance Cycles) were the fastest man and woman as Somer Valley CC staged a 19-mile time trial in Somerset on Saturday.
Janes, the 35-year-old Veloton rider from Melksham in Wiltshire, clocked 41.27 to take the win by 34 seconds from Northover VT rival Dean Robson, while third spot on the men’s podium went to veteran Matt Burden (73 Degrees CC) who was another minute off the pace.
And Jago, 36 and from Bristol, clocked exactly 53 minutes to place 20th overall, and take the women’s prize by just over five minutes from second-placed female Joanna Knight (Bristol South CC).
The event used the U303 circuit which takes riders from Bruton along the B3081 to Bourton, Zeals, Kilmington and through North Brewham to the finish.
Janes won the same event 12 months earlier when he was 1.59 slower, while the 2016 runner-up Ben Anstie had to settle for fifth this time.
“It was quite a good ride,” said Janes. “I wanted to win and go faster than my time last year but I didn’t have a particular time or aim in mind.
“I wanted to win because I’m leading the Western TTA hardriders series at the moment and I will be missing quite a few this year. My son loves the trophy from last year, and I promised him I would win it back so that was all the motivation I needed!
“Conditions were perfect, a bit of a headwind but nothing too much. I was spinning out at 150rpm on the downhill sections.
“Things are going quite well for me this year, I’m doing a lot more training than racing this year.
“I’m targeting the national championships for next year. I’m doing the National 25 this year, but I’m not competitive yet, although I hope to get better for 2018.”
It was the latest in a string of great performances for the in-form David Janes, who lists among his other 2017 victories the a3crg 10 and Chippenham and District Wheelers 25 last month, as well as the Cheltenham and County CC 22, the Gloucester City CC 25, the Western TTA 31-mile event as well as February’s Severn Road Club 25.
Meanwhile, Jago’s victory comes after a string of second places this season, most recently in the Chippenham and District Wheelers 25, Western TTA 100, Bristol South CC 50 and 73 Degrees Bicycles 30 all in June.
April saw Jago take the win in the women’s category at the Gloucester City CC 25-mile TT, her only other victory in an open event so far this season.
