James Phillips (Dream Cycling) celebrated his 33rd birthday in style on Saturday, powering to a convincing victory in the Bristol South CC 10-mile time trial in Gloucestershire.
The Bristol-based rider clocked 21-02 to take the win by 44 seconds and continue a significant upturn in form.
Among his 2017 results so far was eighth in last month’s Welsh 25-mile Championship, and fourth in the Severn RC 25 where he clocked exactly an hour.
But he displayed great form and power to win the event on the U102, which takes riders from North of Iron Acton, up through Rangeworthy on the B4058, through Cromhall and up to the south west fringe of Charfield, before heading back south and finishing north of Rangeworthy.
Josh Griffiths (Bristol South CC) took second place for the promoting club with 21-46, while his team-mate Nick Livermore was third, another 25 seconds off the pace with 22-11.
Jacqueline Wadsworth (Severn Road Club) was fastest woman, and was another rider to show a dramatic improvement. Clocking 26.39, she was fastest female by 26 seconds from the promoting club’s Joanna Knight (Bristol South CC).
Wadsworth’s only other recorded ride in an open event this season was on the same course back in March, where she clocked 29.48 in the University of Bristol CC event. Now six weeks later, she was more than three minutes and more than 2.3mph better.
