John Mulvey (University of Cambridge) and Molly Patch (University of Birmingham) were crowned the British Universities and Colleges Sport 25-mile Champions after the 2017 title races were held in Cambridgeshire on Saturday.

Mulvey, who was third in the national 10-mile BUCS title race a few weeks ago, took the win in the 25-mile event, clocking 52.31 to finish just seven seconds faster than team-mate and BUCS 10-mile champion Sebastian Dickson.

Meanwhile, 21-year-old Patch – the Middlesex-based rider who also won the National 10-mile BUCS championships earlier this month – was the only female rider to go under the hour mark with 59.22, giving her victory by 48 seconds from Anna Morris (Loughborough University), who had to pull out of the 10-mile championship three weeks ago because of a puncture.

The E33/25 course uses a triangular circuit and took the riders from near Newmarket Heath Airfield to the south west of the town, over the A11 to south of Bottisham, then cut across over the A14 to Six Mile Bottom before heading back up to the start area for another lap.

While Mulvey’s time gave him a narrow seven second margin of victory, the gap from second-placed Dickson to third-placed James Hayden (Brunel University) was even smaller at four seconds.

And while Patch won the women’s title by 48 seconds, third-placed Elle Twentyman (University of Bath) was 37 seconds behind Morris.
