Liam Maybank (Twickenham CC) and Madelaine Lee-Smith (Oxted CC) were the fastest man and woman at the Southern Counties CU 25-mile time trial in West Sussex on Sunday morning.

Maybank, the 44-year-old from Claygate in Surrey, took the win with an impressive time of 51.04, while Crawley Wheelers’ James Rix had to settle for second, another 1-15 behind, and Steve Dennis (East Grinstead CC) was third.

“I was hoping to be a bit faster if I’m honest,” said Maybank. “Although I was pleased as it was the first time this season where I’ve felt like I’ve been getting proper power out.

“I was close to my best power output, after having tweaked things like my saddle and drag a bit. There was a slight breeze but nothing to worry about. Conditions were OK, but there was quite a bit of traffic – and lots of roundabouts to slow you up!”

Triathlete Madelaine Lee-Smith took the win in the women’s race, clocking 1:03.35 which was only 22 seconds ahead of runner-up Angela Radden-Rutt (The Cycleroom), with Lewes Wanderers’ Lisa Davis third.

For Maybank, it was his second win of the season following victory in Maidenhead and District’s 15-mile event on March 18, and he was also on the podium at Dorking CC’s East Surrey hardriders 29.9-mile event the weekend before that, where he was third.

He has a busy timetable of events coming up, having entered the Lea Valley CC 25 next Saturday, the High Wycombe CC 10 on Good Friday, then the Kingston Phoenix 10 and Addiscombe CC 25 on the weekend of April 22-23.
