Competing in his first time trial, James Bentley (Team Bottrill-HSS Hire) took victory in Coalville Wheelers’ 10-mile time trial staged on the A10/34 course near Griffydam in Leicestershire.

The 18-year-old from Croxton near Leicester clocked 22.10 for the course to Breedon and back, winning the event by four seconds from James Tucker (Derby Mercury RC) with Richard Jennings (Banbury Star CC) taking third, another seven seconds back.

Relatively warm temperatures of ten degrees coupled with a bright day made for an enjoyable afternoon, although a south westerly wind meant tailwinds on the way out and a headwind while returning.

RPD Racing’s Jessica Denman clocked 26.33 to win the women’s category by 16 seconds from Ellie Cooper (Race Hub).

“I’m really chuffed to get the win,” said Bentley. “I was aiming for about a 22.30, so I was pleased with my time, particularly as the finish had to be moved because of roadworks - people were generally saying that the new finish was a bit slower.

“I’ve been riding for about four years, doing mainly sportives and messing about on Strava. But people have been telling me I was pretty quick, so I decided to give it a proper go and see what I could do.”

Among his plans for the near future are Matlock CC and Retford and District Wheelers time trial, but you can expect to see more of Bentley in time trial results this season.

Placing tenth overall with a time of 23.26, Michiel Vaal (Team Bottrill-HSS Hire) was the fastest veteran on standard with +3.43, while Ian Guilor (Mapperley CC) was second fastest with +3.38 and placed eighth overall with 23.03.

And Vaal and Bentley were joined in the winning Team Bottrill trio in the team category, combining with sixth-placed Scott Walker to make 1:08.34.
