Siblings Chris and Simon secured a McNamara one-two in the Southborough and District Wheelers 10-mile time trial in Kent on New Year’s Day, with Chris (Nuun Sigma Sport) taking the win ahead of Simon (South Downs Bikes).
Chris clocked 21.16 for the Q10/10 course at Bethersden, giving him the win by 24 seconds ahead of Simon and repeating his win from 2016 in the same event.
That time was a new course record, beating the previous best of 21.28 set in 2013 by Steve Berry despite wet and cold weather making for less than ideal conditions.
Having won the event several times in the past, Bronwen Ewing was a non-starter after suffering a mechanical just before the start. Instead, the 2017 winner of that category was Ruth Summerford (Velopace) with 25.01.
Abellio-SFA Racing Team were the team winners, having placed three riders in the top ten. Mike Piper led the way for them, his time of 22.11 giving him third spot overall, and he was joined in the winning trio by Tom Rowing and John Cockrill.
