James Grandfield (Cardiff Triathletes) took the win as Cardiff 100 Miles RCC staged their 9.8-mile time trial near St Brides Major on New Year’s Day.
On paper the 27-year-old dentist was only the fifth seed on the startsheet, but with almost half the field for the solo event not starting – including the two fastest men over the last three seasons – Grandfield took a deserved win.
Light rain and a stiff crosswind coupled with temperatures of around five degrees made for a challenging day in the saddle, although nothing that shouldn’t be expected for New Year’s Day.
Grandfield’s time of 24.07 for the 9.8-mile course just south of St Brides Major gave him the win over Jason Streather (VC St Raphael) by 11 seconds, while Diccon Hill (Cardiff 100 Miles RCC) completed the podium in third, another six seconds back.
Fastest woman was Shona Bennett (Sportzmad) whose time of 29.16 gave her the win in that category by just over a minute from Annamarie Miles (Salt and Sham CC).
And the best of the veterans on standard was Rod Hicks (Port Talbot Wheelers) with a plus of 1-50 to win that category by 23 seconds from Diccon Hill. Hicks’ actual time of 24.27 was also good enough for fourth overall.
Bath CC’s Steven Cottington and Iain Cade were the winners of the two-up event, their time of 22.36 being 49 seconds quicker than Stephen Taylor (Team NBCC) and David Francis (Pembrokeshire Velo).
And Cardiff Ajax pair Lisa Chichester and Bernard Brown clocked 32.27 to win the tandem event.
