James Hayward (Woolwich CC) and Joscelin Lowden (Lewes Wanderers CC) were the winners of the men’s and women’s categories as the East Sussex CA hill-climb was staged on Firle Bostal on Saturday.

Hayward, 36, clocked 3-56.3 for the 1433-yard climb, to take the win by less than three seconds from Rowan Brackston (Imperial College CC), while Isaac Mundy (Oxford University CC) was third despite a one second late start penalty.

Joscelin Lowden (Lewes Wanderers CC) clocked 4-53.1 to comfortably win the women’s prize by 34 seconds with Frances Bromley (Buxton CC) second.

Nick Martin (East Grinstead CC) was the fastest junior, the 17-year-old covering the course in 4-27.7 to place ninth overall, winning that category by around 20 seconds from Cameron Cragg (Lewes Wanderers CC).

Southborough and District Wheelers were the fastest team, with Keith Henderson, Matt Kuwertz and Rory Barrett forming the winning trio despite none of them featuring in the top ten.
