Hinxman breaks course record in Lincoln Wheelers trike 10

Gavin Hinxman (Kettering CC) set a new course record time for the C10/17 course in Lincolnshire on Saturday, clocking 25.15 to win by forty seconds from his nearest rival.

Local rider Ian Pike (Fenland RC) pushed him all the way, eventually clocking 25.55 for second place, a time which also broke the old course record. Sid Charlton (Lincoln Wheelers CC) was third, recording a time of 29.20.

Jon Surtees and Alistair Wareham (SSLL Racing Team) were the standout pair in the tandem event, smashing round the single-carriageway rural course in a time of 20.12. That was a new course record time by 36 seconds, despite it being Wareham’s first ever ride on a tandem.

Simon Beldon (SSLL Racing Team) and his ten-year-old son Alex (Ilkley CC) were second, clocking an impressive 22.36. John and Julie Smithies (Cyclescene CC) were third with 23.51.

Hinxman has had a stellar season, setting many PBs and club records across all distances.

The fact his rapid time was set in only his third competitive trike event – and on a borrowed machine with unusual 24 inch wheels – led first-time event organiser Andy Newham to tip him to break the trike comp record before too long.

Conditions on the day were almost ideal for the time of year, with sun, and a light north easterly wind making for rapid times and close battles down the field.

Promoting club Lincoln Wheelers CC prides itself on being one of the leading clubs for trike riders in the country, encouraging many riders to tackle the discipline.

“It’s not for everybody, and it can be difficult to keep going in a straight line!” said Newham after the event. “But some people take to it immediately.”

Barry Philips was awarded the Gwyneth Trophy, (awarded in memory of ‘event mastermind’ and lifelong tricyclist Pete Holland’s wife) for the most meritorious performance by a club rider in the event, in only his second time on a trike.

A spot prize is also awarded to the rider who, in the opinion of the race organiser, takes the infamous Besthorpe turn as smoothly as possible.

The challenge is for tandem and trike riders to negotiate the acute, tighter than ninety-degree bend, at race pace without looking as though they’re steering a battleship. Jane Moore (Willesden CC) took the prize this year.
