Richard Bussell made a successful defence of his national title over ten miles by once again taking victory in the National Championship.
The event was held in Rake, Hampshire, and the cream of the country’s time trialists descended in an attempt to wrestle Bussell’s title away from him.
Going into the event, Bussell had identified James Gullen and Ryan Perry as his main competitors and it proved to be the case with a very close set of results.
The wind was high and on a course that undulated for most of its duration, it made it all the tougher for the riders.
Bussell, riding for AeroCoach, completed in 20.35, just four seconds ahead of James Gullen of Pedal Heaven who stopped the clock at 20.39.
Ryan Perry, who has already landed the titles over 25, 50 and 100 miles this year, missed out on his fourth accolade and had to settle for third with the Langdale Lightweights rider finishing in 20.46.
Richard Bussell, 27 and from Stourbridge, said after the event: “It was very windy today and that made it really tough, I tried course last Sunday and I was only 15 seconds quicker today.
“Even without the wind, it’s not an easy course. You really have to hammer the first bit because it’s all up or down. There’s about two miles of flat and a really long climb.
“The competition was really good this year and I knew it was going to be close. Ryan Perry was obviously going for his fourth championship win of the season and he’s such a nice chap, I think he was genuinely happy for me.
“It’s hard getting beat by such close margins but I really felt like this one was mine to lose because it was my title to defend.
“I didn’t expect to win last year this year but this year the pressure was on and I knew it was going to close. I hope to be back next year. You’ve got to try and defend it!
“I’ve got a time trial on the V178 next, that’s my last one of year. I’m going to have a week or two to rest because this season has really taken its toll on me to be honest. Then I’ll do a few social rides and start looking at some hill climbs.”
