Hayley Simmonds (AeroCoach) slashed a whopping 4-26 off the old national competition record for 50 miles as she powered round the E2/50c course in Cambridgeshire in 1:42.20 to finish 19th overall and fastest woman in the Shaftesbury CC event on Saturday.
And the event also saw the men’s team competition record for 50 miles broken, with the Team Bottrill trio of John Dewey, Matthew Smith and Daniel Barnett total 4:52.56, taking twelve and a half minutes off the old mark set four years ago by Team Pedal Revolution.
The men’s event was won by Stephen Irwin (North Lancs RC) who clocked 1:35.13 and go within just 30 seconds of breaking Matt Bottrill’s competition record.
Simmonds, the British TT champion, was almost tem minutes quicker than her nearest rival on the day as she powered round the course from Six Mile Bottom to Four Went Ways and Red Lodge.
Dozens of riders set new personal best times on a near-perfect afternoon, and although some suffered in the heat others managed it well enough and benefitted from the still conditions.
For Irwin, his win was sweetened further by beating three riders who were ahead of him in the National 50-Mile Championship last month.
