Ryan Perry and Hayley Simmonds were crowned national 100-mile champions after the title race promoted by Stockton Wheelers in North Yorkshire on Sunday morning.

Perry (Langdale Lightweights RT), clocked 3:23.52 to take the win by almost two minutes from John Dewey (Team Bottrill), with Richard Bideau (Pendle Forest CC) third.

And Simmonds (AeroCoach) covered the T1002/1 course near Kirklevington in 3:46.37 to win the women’s title by almost three minutes from Angela Hibbs (Fusion RT-Fierlan), while Bronwen Ewing (Rye and District Wheelers) was third.

The men’s team prize went to the Team Bottrill trio of Dewey, Charles Taylor and Jonathan Parker, and was a new national competition record time of 10:42.10, slicing 8-49 from the old record, held since 2001 by Team Pedal Revolution.

The women’s team prize went to the Born to Bike-Bridgetown Cycles team with National 12-hour champion Katja Rietdorf, Suzanne Semple and Lynne Biddulph making up the winning trio.

Conditions were reasonable but not perfect. Although it was dry it was overcast, and the wind increased to become an issue for the final hour of the event.

“This is only my second 100-mile event,” said Perry, a captain in the Army who rode and won the Anfield 100 at the end of May. “I enjoyed the Anfield more than today. After 80 miles I was really cruising along. The last 20 miles were pretty hard but I still enjoyed it all.”

Meanwhile, Simmonds said: “I thought I may have a chance at the competition record today, but the first and third legs were so hard that I couldn’t make up the last time.

“I’m off to Germany for a stage race soon, which includes a time trial leg. I rode it last year and liked it. But after that I’ll be concentrating on domestic time trials for the rest of the season.”
