Stephen Irwin made the best of horrific conditions to top the standings at the Belper BC 25-mile event in Etwall on Saturday.

With a fantastic field of riders on the start sheet, some fast results were expected but the howling wind made for a difficult ride and many entrants elected to not even attempt to ride.

But it was still a competitive event and it was North Lancs’ Irwin who coped the best, powering round in 47.05 to take yet another win.

He was ten seconds quicker than fellow veteran Andy Jackson, riding for SSLL RT, who completed in 47.15.

There was a tie for third place with Secret Training CC team mates Simon Wilson and Adam Duggleby both stopping the clock at 47.40.

There was a shock result in the women’s category with pre-event favourite Hayley Simmonds being beaten by Tyneside Vagabonds CC’s Anna Turvey.

Anna has been in good form of late but she was a full 55 seconds quicker than AeroCoach’s Simmonds, the reigning British time trial champion.

Turvey completed in 51.04 and Simmonds had to settle for second place with 51.59. Clarice Chung (SSL Racing Team) was third in 54.13. Karen Ledger (Langsett Cycles RT) was fastest veteran woman in 55.11.

The team prize was won by SSLL RT with Jackson, John Surtees and Joel Wainman combining.
