Superfast conditions greeted riders for the opening day of Team Axiom’s weekender, allowing Rob Sharland (Paceline RT) to break Michael Hutchinson’s course record.
Sharland’s time of 18.49 was eleven seconds faster than second placed rider Paul Ashley’s (Fareham Wheelers) 19.00, which also broke Hutchinson’s 15-year-old record for the P881 course.
James Mapley (Blazing Saddles) was a further ten seconds back for third.
Rachel Eliott (Newbury RC) posted a rapid 20.36 to take the women’s prize from Caitlin Peters (i-team.cc) who clocked 22.59 for the ten-mile distance.
The vets categories were keenly contested, with John Samways (Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers) taking the A title with 20.02 and Mark Newton (Elite Cycling) the B category with a swift 20.01.
Nick Dwyer (Lewes Wanderers CC) posted 19.40 to claim the vets C category and Mike O’Gorman (Worthing Excelsior) was fastest vet D with 21.26.
Fareham Wheelers rounded out the prize list taking the team award.
