Paceline RT’s Pat Wright and Lewes Wanderers’ Tamar Vanderhaas both set new course records as they powered to victory in the Sussex CA 15-mile time trial, staged on the G15/93 near Steyning in West Sussex on Saturday morning.

31-year-old Wright clocked 31.52 to win the event by just nine seconds and beat Mike Coyle’s course record – set the previous Tuesday – by more than a minute.

In fact the next two riders also broke Coyle’s mark with Simon Mcnamara (South Downs Bikes) clocking 32.02 to take the lead before eventually settling for third spot, while Steve Kane (Brighton Excelsior CC) was one second quicker than Mcnamara, also breaking the record and taking second spot.

The women’s course record was also broken, with Tamar Vanderhaas (Lewes Wanderers CC) clocking 38.25 to take 52 seconds off the old mark, again set last Tuesday by Katerina Avramides.

Worthing Excelsior CC took the team prize, with Dominic Maxwell, John McGrath and Mike O’Gorman placing seventh, eighth and tenth respectively, while the fastest veteran on target time was Central Sussex CC rider Alan Robinson who covered the course in 39.18 to give him a plus of 9.09.

Jack Churchill (Brighton Excelsior CC) was the fastest junior with 36.56, and there was also a great ride by Mark Vowells (CVC Bexley), the 63-year-old who covered the course in 39.31 to set what is believed to be a new veterans’ national trike record.

Among Pat Wright’s previous performances this season are victories in the Farnham Road Club 10 last month, both stages of the South Downs Bikes TT in February, as well as winning the Southern Counties CU 10 in April.

He placed second in the East Surrey RC hardriders 27-mile event in March, and was also runner-up in Kingston Wheelers’ sporting 14 in February as well as third in the Maidenhead and District hilly 30 in March.
