Steven Burke (MBE) of Team Wiggins and Phillip Graves (Clifton CC) were the marquee riders at the Otley CC 10 this weekend.

Graves is on a hot streak at the moment, having won round two of the RTTC Classic series and eight other time trials. He must have anticipated a tough challenge this weekend, both from Olympic gold medallist Burke, and the infamous ‘Red Wall’ leading back up the course and determining the SPOCO status of the event.

Having seen and felt the expected northerly winds, many predicted purgatory for the riders, and they were right, with several limping up the incline in the granny gear. Not so for Graves, who stayed on top of the gear and rhythm to come home first in 20.35, half a minute outside of his course record set in balmy sunshine in 2009.

Steven Burke haemorrhaged time on the climb, and came in 45 seconds adrift of Graves, a significant margin and an indication of the Clifton CC rider’s strength and form. Time gaps were large throughout the top ten, with the third place rider, Jonathan Wears of SSLL another 29 seconds back.

Burke admitted that the wind knocked him, “it was harder than I expected”, and isn’t looking forward to next weekend when he takes on the Red Wall twice in a very lumpy 25, incorporating the same course.  

Jessica Bacon made it a successful day for York Cycleworks after Richard Sharp’s win in the YCF 10. She was over a minute up on Suzie Richards (Albarosa CC) in a convincing display of power and souplesse.
