Philip Graves rode to a deserved victory in the Harrogate Nova CC 24-mile time trial in North Yorkshire on Saturday, breaking the four-year-old course record in the process.

On a fine but cold afternoon, the Clifton CC York rider clocked 51.13 to break the previous record, held by Steve Berry (Team Swift) since the first year the V262 was used in its current form.

For Graves, it was his fifth straight victory so far in 2016 and bodes well for the season ahead.

His time was 36 seconds quicker than Andy Jackson (SSLL Racing Team), whose team-mate Joel Wainman completed the podium in third spot, more than three minutes off the pace with 54.32.

The 12-mile course takes riders from Ripon to Kirby Hill and on to Dishforth before returning to the town, and Graves covered the first of two laps in 26.04, just ten seconds quicker than Jackson.

However, on his second lap he upped the pace and clocked 25.09, which was 26 seconds quicker than Jackson and sealed the victory.

Wainman had a bad first lap and was fifth at the halfway stage, but pulled it back on the second lap which he completed 1-38 quicker than his first lap to snatch third by just one second.

There was a tie for fourth place between Nigel Haigh (Strategic Lions) and Stephen Ayres (Bronte Wheelers) with 54.33, while a further minute back was Ben Wimpory (PMR @ Toachim House) was sixth.

The promoting club’s own Eleanor Haresign (Harrogate Nova CC) was the fastest female with 1-02-47, which gave her victory in that category by almost four minutes from Kirsty Smith (Team Swift).

Fastest junior was Nick Hamilton (Teesdale CRC) whose tome of 1-00-49 put him 22nd overall.
