Charlie Bailey and Eva Callinan were crowned the fastest junior boy and girl at the National Youth Championship Finals at the Croft circuit in North Yorkshire on Saturday afternoon.
16-year-old Londoner Bailey (Lee Valley Youth CC) topped the podium with a time of 21-00 for the ten miles, while Callinan clocked 24-49.
“I didn’t feel that good out on the course, so was quite surprised to get the win,” said Bailey.
Meanwhile, Callinan said: “It’s my fourth year doing this event and I was third last year, but I’m a lot stronger this year so I knew that a win was possible.”
In hill-climbing SwiftCarbon Pro Cycling ace Ed Laverack stormed to victory in the Weaver Valley CC event on the iconic Cat and Fiddle climb in Cheshire on Sunday, taking the win just 24 hours after finishing the gruelling eight-stage Tour of Britain.
The 24-year-old from Llanelli clocked 18-31 for the 6.3-mile climb out of Macclesfield to the summit, giving him the win by just two seconds from 2015 National Hill-Climb Champion and 2016 National 10-Mile Champion Richard Bussell (AeroCoach), while another former national hill-climb Dan Evans (ASSOS Equipe UK) took third.
And in the women’s event Lucy Lee (VC Melyd) covered the course in 23-36 to win by 25 seconds from Jessica Evans (ASSOS Equipe UK).
Elsewhere, Salt and Sham CC staged their first open hill-climb event on the new Chew Hill climb (UH92).
Reigning national champion Andrew Feather (ChampionSystem UK) had to settle for second spot with Josh Coyne (BPM Coaching) clocking a superb 2-24.1 for the 0.57-mile climb, 0.9 quicker than Feather while Glyndwr Griffiths (&3 Degrees Bicycles) was third and local rider Jess Railton (Bristol South CC) being fastest female in 3-17.3.
In Derbyshire, Calum Brown (B38-Cycles in Motion) was winner of the Bolsover and District CC climb in the grounds of Hardwick Hall. He clocked 1-17.1 for the 615-metre climb, giving him the win by 8.9 seconds from Tom Garnett (Ilkley CC), while Brown’s team-mate at B38 Hannah Tweddell was quickest of the women in 2-05.08.
Fiona Burnie and Jacob Vezey were victorious at the GS Metro climb of Hedley on the Hill on Sunday.
GS Metro rider Burnie clocked 5-05.3 which was 30 seconds quicker than her nearest rival, while Vezey covered the 1.7-kilometre MH11 course in 4-22.5 to win by seven seconds from Jamie Johnson.
He might have had to have settled for second in the Salt and Sham CC event on Sunday, but Andrew Feather was victorious in Saturday’s Beacon Wheelers climb on Great Dun Fell in Cumbria.
His time of 21.02 was a new course record by around two minutes, while Rebecca Richardson (Brother.UK Fusion) was quickest female in 26-27.
And in Hampshire Daniel Hills (Brixton CC) and Rosamund Bradbury (Sigma Sport) were the winners at the CC Basingstoke climb of Brockham Hill Lane on Sunday.
Hills set a new course record with a time of 4-05.17 to beat Ian Middleton (Foran CC) into second, while Bradbury was 17th overall as well as fastest female in 4-56.96.
