Around 100 of the country’s finest time trial riders are heading to South Wales on Sunday for the National 50-Mile Championships.
Top names, record breakers and national champions are in the field of 76 men and 22 women who will tackle the R50/5 course between Llandovery and Carmarthen.
All of the men who made it onto last year’s podium return, with 2018 winner and national competition record holder Marcin Bialoblocki (NOPINZ) being the last man off, while last year’s runner-up Chris Bartley (AS Test Team) and third-placed Adam Duggleby (Vive le Velo) are off 20 and 10 minutes before the Pole respectively.
Last year’s women’s winner Anna Turvey is not riding this time, but 2018 runner-up Emma Lewis (The Independent Pedaler) is back and in great form.
And last year’s team winners, Alice Lethbridge, Liz Powell and Vicky Gill (Drag2Zero) are back and could all make a push for the podium too, while the last rider off in the women’s event is their team-mate Kate Allan who has an impressive PB of 1-45-36.
Away from the National 50, there are a host of events which are also counting events in the British Best All-Rounder competition. Leicester Forest CC stage a 50 near Seagrave, where Matt Bottrill (Team Bottrill) is last man off. Of the women, watch out for Emily Robertson (NOPINZ) who was second in the 2014 National 50-Mile Championship!
The Southend Wheelers 50 takes place on Sunday near Steeple in Essex, with Gray Turnock (Finsbury Park CC) the last man off, while in West Sussex it’s the Sussex CA 50 with Howard Bayley (Blazing Saddles) the scratch man.
In Shropshire it’s the Birkenhead North End CC 25 near Prees, where Manchester BC’s Joseph Dobson is the favourite, while in Cornwall Giant Helton host a 25-mile event near Roche.
Caithness CC are holding a weekend of events, starting on Saturday with a 25-mile time trial near Thurso. Then on Sunday, they have a 10-mile event in the morning and an 11-mile event in the afternoon, all starting from Thurso but using different courses.
Severn Road Club are holding 10-mile event near Stone on Saturday, with Jonathan Gates (RAF CA)among the riders likely to be pushing for the podium.
As well as a tandem event, the Severn RC event also includes the West District heat of the National Youth Championship.
There’s a big field of more than 100 riders for the VC Cumbria 25 on Saturday afternoon. The event from Cockermouth to Keswick and back has Jake Wright (Team Lusso) as the pre-race favourite and last man off, while Philip Jones (Transition RT) won’t be far behind.
And on Sunday the Barnesbury CC three-up 15-mile event takes place near Cramlington in Northumberland.
The GS Metro trio of Danny Grieves, Ben Lane and Carl Donaldson are the last off, while the Team Swift trio of Lewis Timmins, Graham Crammond and Richard Sharp will be pushing them for the win, as could the Team Kirkley Cycles team of Thomas Hutchinson, Julian Macbride and Lewis Wake.
Of the women’s team, Blaydon CC have Gemma Hutchins, Venda Louise Pollock and Joanne Rea.
