Saturday sees the GHS Trophy 10-mile Championship take place at Sawtry, Cambridgeshire. Over the years many of our future stars first hit the headlines when they rode off with that Championship. The RTTC took on the event in 1966 and in recent years riders like Chris Boardman, Steve Cummings, Alex Dowsett, Eric Rowsell, Ryan Mullen, Nicole Cooke and the Barnes, Hana and Alice have made their mark in the professional ranks.
Will some future Champion leave his mark on this year’s event, promoted by South East Midlands DC, only time will tell. This year 173 boys and girls are listed for the final with riders from as far away as the Isle of Man and Guernsey chasing glory.
Among the boys last year’s winner Joe Laverick (Caistor Grammer School) returns while among the girls Caitlin Peters (i-Team CC) and April Tacey (Team 22) second and third last year both look to improve, Peters having won the recent Junior Girls 10-mile Championship. Cavan Walker (Prologue RT) Junior 25-mile Champion and third in the Junior `10` title race is a serious challenge, but new names may emerge to climb the podium steps.
Event HQ is at Sawtry Village Hall, Green End Road, PE28 5UY with the first rider away at 14.01pm.
