Welcome to Greystoke Forest
This round of the RTTC Classic Series normally uses the Bassenthwaite Lake circuit, with which many of you will be familiar.
Unfortunately, the A66 Keswick – Cockermouth road has been unavailable for time-trialling because of major roadworks for almost a year, so we’ve moved the event to the Greystoke Forest circuit.
A 22mile version of this course has been in use for many years, but we’ve adapted it to suit this event by using only the main 14-mile circuit based on Greystoke village, omitting the 4-miles from and back to Penrith.
The features of this course can be split into 5 sections –
1. Greystoke to Thanet Well crossroads (4m):
after 300 yards, a left fork leads to a very gradual 2m ascent before a left-hand bend into Johnby, where the road steepens slightly for 1.5m and then descends to Thanet Well crossroads.
2. Thanet Well to Hutton Roof crossroads (1.5m):
left at the crossroads and a gentle downhill on a narrow and twisty road past Newsham farm, then a sharp left-hand bend and a steeper descent over Newsham bridge and a gradual ascent to Hutton Roof Crossroads. Watch out for gravel throughout this section.
3. Hutton Roof crossroads to Murrah crossroads (2m):
left at the crossroads, then a straight section, rising for 1m then a long descent to the Murrah crossroads.
Watch for broken surfaces and keep to the left at a blind summit about half-way.
4. Murrah crossroads to The Sportsman Inn (2.5m):
left at the crossroads, then a moderate climb for 0.5m followed by a level twisty stretch past Murrah farm, leading into the main climb of the circuit, which is 0.75m to Berrier summit.
Descend steeply through Berrier hamlet, taking care through right-hand bends to Berrier Foot, where keep straight ahead, ignoring the left branch of the road at the bottom (which is a shortcut to Greystoke). Continue up a gentle rise and a short descent to the junction at The Sportsman Inn.
5. The Sportsman Inn to Greystoke (4m):
left at the junction then 1.5m along an undulating road to the junction with the road from Penruddock, where left to join the B5288.
Follow the B5288 for 2.5m through Motherby (care – vehicles parked etc) through a sharp left-hand bend, then a long gradual descent to finish the 1 lap version at the Greystoke sign.
The 2-lap version continues into Greystoke and takes the left branch past the start point.
The start is in the centre of the village, near the entrance to Greystoke Castle and near the Boot & Shoe pub. There is a moderately large car park adjacent to the hall – please park with consideration and do not take up space with gazebos, rollers etc. Overspill parking can be found around the village, but do not impinge on private property.
Please do not warm up on the course whilst the event is in progress. Use the B5288 east of the village, or the unclassified Berrier Road. Also please note that the start area is in a residential village, so please do not cause any unnecessary disturbance.
A copy of the CTT Risk Assessment will be displayed at the event HQ. Please check for late information. The course is predominantly on unclassified country roads with some rough/broken surfaces following winter storms. Take particular care on the narrow twisty section between Thanet Well and Newsham bridge.
Local regulations: The following local regulations have been approved by the CTT National Committee in accordance with Regulation 38. Any breaches may lead to disciplinary action being taken - Local regulation No. 5: In all events, competitors prior to starting are not permitted to ride past the finish timekeeper during the duration of the event.
