Dalton and MacFarlane charge to wins at Reading CC climb

Charlotte Dalton (Elevate RT) took her second victory in as many open hill climb events in the Reading CC event on Streatley, while Harry MacFarlane (TAAP Kalas) won the open race.

Following her success at the Cycle Club Basingstoke event last weekend Dalton tasted success again, covering the one mile climb in three minutes and 20 seconds.

The hill, with an average gradient of 13% and a maximum of 25.9%, runs from near Streatley School and heading towards Goring & Streatley Golf Club with the steepest section after the half-way point.

Former national hill climb champions Andrew Feather and Bithja Jones hold the course records in 2-04 and 2-41 respectively and they remain for another day.

Dalton, aged 24, finished 14th in her first National Hill Climb Championship last season and looks to be building some good form heading into October once again.

Katrina Tse (Oxford University CC) finished third on Streatley last year and returned 12 months later to go one better and finish runner-up this time out in 3-35.

Completing the women’s podium positions on a good day for Elevate RT was Kate Tidmarsh who stopped the clock in 3-38.

“It was great to test the legs on a steeper, more constant gradient climb,” said Dalton. “I was happy with the way I paced it, managing to save a bit for end. Great to get another win for Elevate!”

In the open event scratch rider MacFarlane, aged 27, also took his second win from as many open events this season, completing the course in 2-10.

The TAAP Kalas rider also won the Elevate RT event two weeks earlier and was quickest once again finishing eight seconds clear of her nearest rival.

Joshua Aiken (Elevate RT) led the battle behind finishing second in 2-18, while Ewan Tuohy (Arctic Aircon RT) was third (2-23).

“It was great take the win again at Streatley, again behind some strong riders,” said MacFarlane. “I was unsure of where my fitness was but I took six seconds out of my time from last year and it's given me some good moral boost for the races ahead.

“Many thanks to Reading CC for organising.”

Quickest junior rider was Tom Wood (Elevate RT) whose time of 2-46 was good enough for 14th position overall.

Tandem riders Ray Bennett and Wendy Bennett (Reading CC) also took on the climb and recorded a time of 5-18.

An open road event on the 2020 National Hill Climb Course, Streatley Hill

Course Description:
Start in Streatley on B4009 just west of the traffic lights at the junction with A329 at TP52 8 yards west of the exit from The Coombe where the pavement ends and 24 yards before the 30 mph de-restriction signs. Climb up the hill for 837 yards to Finish at the top at TP DP39 just past a gravel track on the left and a car park on the right. Distance: 0.475 miles
