Steyning Bostal Hill Climb

Bethan Male helped Laka x Pedal Mafia Race Team to double success in the women’s event at the Sussex CA Hill Climb on Saturday morning, with Gabe Dellar winning the men’s event.

A time of 5-47.10 helped Male to victory with team-mate Eline Smith taking second place in 5-49 and Penge Cycle Club’s Wendy Mathie completing the podium in 6-16.40.

Dellar, riding for Southampton University Road Cycling Club, clocked 4-13.80 to triumph overall with Richard Cartland (HuntBikeWheels.com) taking the runner-up spot in 4-20.60, narrowly ahead of Redhill CC rider Matthew Ferguson in 4-21.30.

Elsewhere, the team prize went to Southborough & District Wheelers thanks to the efforts of Ben Neal, Glen Whittington and Henry Weaver.

Neal, who finished in 4-34.80, completed an impressive outing by being named the fastest Under-18, while Mathie was also awarded fastest female veteran and Cartland taking the fastest male title.

This marks a first hill climb victory for Dellar since winning the Farnham Road Club event on October 17 last year, although he took victory in the Wadebridge Coasters 10-mile time trial on July 20.

This event, run on the GH/92 course, starts on Bostal Road in Steyning and proceeds up Bostal Road, past the junction with Newham Lane, to finish at the top of hill opposite the South Downs Way wooden 'footpath' sign.
