The event has again been sponsored by Hotel Milano Helvetia, Riccione in Italy (www.hotelmilano.net), one of the area’s famous “Bike Hotels”. The hotel is offering prizes of 2 five day stays at the hotel on their “Plus” package for cyclists, one for the winner of the Men’s/Espoirs’ in the 3-lap event and one for the winner of Women in the 2-lap Women and Veteran's event. During their stay, the package will give our winners bed, breakfast, evening meal and post-ride afternoon buffet along with the assistance of a guide to show them the best local routes (with the hotel’s other guests of course). The prizes don’t include air fares but many UK airports have budget routes to destinations in north eastern Italy which allow easy transfers to the hotel by bus, train or taxi. Bike hire is available at the hotel.

The Hotel Milano Helvetia will, in addition, be offering a 10% reduction on the cost of their stay (excluding extras like bike hire and bar bills, of course) to ALL ENTRANTS to the event!

Long-standing sponsor of the event, Sam Clark at Sett Valley Cycles, kindly sponsors the Mountain Time Trial again in 2022.

Wiejak climbs to women’s victory in Merlin Cycles Classic Se
Christina Wiejak

Christina Wiejak (Saint Piran) was a clear victor by over two minutes in the women’s event at the second round of the Merlin Cycles Classic Series.

Wiejak, aged 29 covered 22 miles of hilly terrain in a winning time of one hour, four minutes and 18 seconds.

Organised by Buxton CC/Sett Valley Cycles the Buxton Mountain Time Trial winner Wiejak was also awarded a five-day stay in Riccione, Italy.

The event saw riders complete an 11-mile lap starting at Longnor before heading out north-westerly before joining the A53 back south past the village of Flash and climbing alongside the Black Brook Nature Reserve before heading through Hardings Booth back to Longnor to complete the lap.

Conditions were good with what started as a cool morning warming up as the event went on to warm by midday.

On her first outing of the season Wiejak clocked an average speed of over 20.5 miles per hour despite the lumpy terrain.

Amy Gornall (Pro-Noctis - Redchilli Bikes - Heidi Kjeldsen) was also on her first open time trial outing of 2022 and finished second in a time of 1-06-28.

Meanwhile, completing the podium positions was Keri Parton (Team Boompods) completing the course in 1-12-02.

Host club rider Liz Batt was the fastest veteran woman on scratch recording a time of 1-16-03.

“It was a really tough lap and my sort of thing,” said Wiejak.

“I mix my time trialling with road racing but I like time trialling as it’s more of a solo effort. It is a bit more about my ability to dig deep.

“I like the repeated efforts of sporting courses. The really short and snappy efforts make it like a hilly criterium.

“It was a really great event and really enjoyable.”

In the women’s road bike category Anna Weaver (Team Kirkley Cycles) was the quickest rider with her time of 1-09-31 good enough for 19th road bike overall.

Alison Dockney (Macclesfield Wheelers) was second woman road bike in 1-09-37 while Louisa Cooper (Bournemouth Jubilee Whs) was third (1-16-42).

The fastest women’s veteran in the road bike category was Sally Maitland (Beeston Cycling Club) in 1-17-31.

The girls’ road bike category was won by juvenile Sophie Heighton (Ferryhill Whs) who covered the 22 miles in 1-20-07.

Quickest girl on a time trial bike was juvenile Abbey Thompson (Stonham Barns Park – SYRT) who clocked 1-24-09.
