The Shaftesbury Cycling Club HQ is based at Mountnessing between Brentwood & Chelmsford (CM15 0UG) from which the club runs a well-supported Wednesday Evening 10 Time Trial series. The club promotes an Open 50 event (the 50 having started in 1906) held on the fast E2 course, with several competition records set, this event is very popular attracting a high quality field. Club TT events are held on fast and sporting courses, thus providing opportunities for all riders to take part.
In addition the club hold two Audax UK Randonnées events a year run from the Club "Ute" at Ugly (Theydon Lodge CM22 6JD). Winter events include Turbo Training sessions and Club Runs organised from the Moountnessing HQ. The club is active on social media on Facebook and WhatsApp platforms and has over 140 members covering a very wide age range with members participating in most areas of cycling activity. Why the Shaftesbury? - after all London was and still is a long way from Dorset. Well the Hall where they met was founded by Lord Shaftesbury, the 7th Earl, and the Club was supported by and is named after him. Not only has the name remained unchanged all these years but the Club Colours of Cardinal and Black were chosen in 1890 and only the Gold trimmings have been added since.
